The Category 5 storm caused extensive damage across the island, severely affecting housing, water, electricity, telecommunications, and road infrastructure. The Jamaican government estimates the total economic damage to be between US $6 billion and $7 billion—equivalent to nearly a third of the nation’s GDP—with some experts warning that losses could reach as high as US $16 billion. Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness described the hurricane’s impact as the most severe disaster Jamaica has ever faced, resulting in widespread flooding and destruction from St. Elizabeth to Montego Bay.
